Queen Beatrix has officially opened Gate terminal on the 23rd of September 2011 . Gate (Gas Access To Europe) terminal is located on the Maasvlakte in Rotterdam and is the first import terminal for liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the Netherlands.

Gate Terminal

Gate terminal is operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The terminal consist of three storage tanks, two jetty's and a process area where the LNG is regassified. The terminal’s functions are: receipt, a buffer between receipt and continuous supply of natural gas, regasification, supply.

What is LNG?

LNG is natural gas that is converted into a liquid by cooling it at atmospheric pressure to approximately -160 °C. LNG is odourless, non-toxic and non-corrosive and is not kept under pressure in this cooled state: it is a cold liquid. LNG is flammable only if it comes into contact with an ignition source in its regasified state and the percentage of the gas in the air is between 5 and 15%.
